Kira Davis: No Más Rodeos… Es Hora de Acabar con los Sindicatos de Maestros

Cuando comencé en el activismo por la elección escolar (school choice), el enfoque recomendado era nunca criticar a los sindicatos de maestros. La maquinaria de las relaciones públicas sindicalistas ha sido tan eficaz durante décadas que solo mencionar los obstáculos que habitualmente lanzan frente al progreso educativo fue un tercer carril. Te haría ganar la etiqueta de “destructor sindical” entre las mismas personas a las que estabas tratando de persuadir. La elección escolar es un tema bipartidista con muchos demócratas a favor, pero fue difícil reclutar a esos demócratas para que se unieran en la lucha cuando podría parecer que les estás pidiendo que denigren el sistema sindical.
Así que nos mantuvimos alejados e hicimos nuestros argumentos de otras formas. Hay demasiado dinero y poca responsabilidad; las estadísticas muestran que la elección funciona; los estudiantes de minorías pobres se benefician más de la elección escolar; Esta crea una competencia que impulsa a las escuelas públicas a mejorar su juego. Hay una larga lista de argumentos persuasivos y, en aras de no crear una división innecesaria en alianzas delicadas, pasamos de puntillas por el tema de la unión o sindicato.
Pero ya no puedo negar el mayor problema al que se enfrenta el éxito de nuestros estudiantes. Ya no puedo pretender que el obstáculo número uno para brindar la educación que necesitan nuestras comunidades es solo un “tema secundario.” Ya no puedo ser parte de la perpetuación de la codicia en nombre de “unirnos.” Lo que les sucedió a nuestros hijos durante COVID me ha quitado lo último de mi tolerancia.
Los sindicatos de docentes son un flagelo y es hora de acabar con ellos.
No me malinterpreten. Soy una estudiante de historia y comprendo el poder de la negociación colectiva y cómo cambió nuestra sociedad para mejor durante la era industrial. Los industriales ricos y emprendedores nos empujaron a la era del dominio estadounidense y eso es algo bueno. No hay duda de que, sin haber sido forzados a rendir cuentas, muchos habrían continuado abusando y trabajando en exceso a los empleados desesperados y a sus hijos. La sindicalización forzó esa responsabilidad.
El poder y la codicia no son exclusivos de ningún conjunto económico y, desafortunadamente, a medida que los sindicatos comenzaron a aumentar su influencia y el dinero de las cuotas, también aumentaron su codicia. Esa es una relación transaccional y las empresas pueden ser responsables de sus propias y terribles negociaciones. No me gusta, pero es un asunto privado. Todos pueden hacer lo que quieran.
Los contribuyentes pagan a los maestros de las escuelas públicas. Cuando se sindicalizan, no lo hacen contra una gran corporación como Ford o GE. Necesariamente se están sindicalizando contra el contribuyente. Excepto que los contribuyentes no tienen voz en las negociaciones. Es una relación unilateral, en la que los sindicatos tienen todo el poder y sus jefes (nosotros, los contribuyentes) no tienen más remedio que rezar para que negocien ellos mismos para que realmente sirvan a nuestros hijos.
Hasta ahora han fracasado estrepitosamente. No debería sorprendernos, dado que son sindicatos de profesores, no de estudiantes. Está ahí en el nombre. Pero es vergonzoso que personas como Randi Weingarten sigan usando a nuestros hijos como escudos de su codicia, pretendiendo que todo lo que hacen es por los estudiantes. Nada de lo que hacen es para los niños y podría no importarme si fueran honestos al respecto.
Los Weingartens del mundo no tienen interés en crear mejores oportunidades para nuestros hijos. La parte más vulnerable de su noble exterior ha sido despojada por COVID. Mientras los padres veían impotentes a sus hijos hundirse en el aislamiento y la depresión y perder más de un año de trabajo de habilidades vitales, los sindicatos de maestros intimidaron a las juntas escolares locales y se abrieron camino en la CDC, de todos los lugares, para hacer cumplir sus deseos en el lenguaje COVID que salía del armario de las entidades de salud de la nación. Fue sumamente malvado.
Es aún más malvado que Randi Weingarten, presidenta del sindicato de maestros más poderoso de Estados Unidos y líder del único obstáculo que impide que las escuelas regresen a la educación, haya estado tratando de enloquecer a los estadounidenses que han estado abogando para que los niños regresen a la escuela esta todo el tiempo.
Ella nos pide que creamos que, si bien las escuelas privadas han podido operar de manera segura y completa, de alguna manera las escuelas públicas son inmunes a las soluciones. El diablo es un mentiroso y los mentirosos mienten todo el tiempo.
Mientras los padres lloramos por nuestros hijos, los sindicatos nos llamaron egoístas, crueles, incluso asesinos. Por diversas razones, querían quedarse en casa y seguir pagando, mientras que las personas a las que supuestamente servían tenían que quedarse sin paga para quedarse en casa o abandonar a sus hijos a sus propios dispositivos durante el día para poder poner comida en la mesa. Cuando nos quejamos más, nos acusaron de solo querer un servicio de niñera glorificado. No. Queremos la educación que ustedes establezcan no solo como nuestro “derecho humano,” sino como el camino estrecho hacia el éxito.
Las escuelas públicas absorben más y más de nuestros dólares de impuestos cada año mientras cumplen cada vez menos sus promesas. Cuando nos atrevemos a cuestionar los resultados, nos dicen que solo necesitan más dinero y menos competencia.
Los sindicatos de maestros han frustrado el progreso de nuestros niños en cada esquina. Han retrasado sus vidas al servicio de sus propios caprichos. Si los maestros de Estados Unidos están tan asustados por un virus para el que ahora todos han sido vacunados, deben dejar de fumar. No tienen derecho a sus trabajos si no están dispuestos a darles a nuestros hijos lo que tienen derecho: una educación pública decente.
Los sindicatos han destruido la educación en el centro de las ciudades, destruido las tasas de graduación de los estudiantes de minorías y sobornado a nuestros políticos para que trabajen activamente contra sus empleadores: El Pueblo. Ya no son un servicio, son un drenaje. Son malvados y han permitido que los más viles, egoístas y codiciosos entre ellos suban a la cima y engorden con el sufrimiento de los estudiantes que dicen amar.
Es hora de disolver los sindicatos de maestros. Están desactualizados. Ya no vivimos en un mundo sin protecciones para los trabajadores e incluso si lo hiciéramos, un sindicato público es y siempre será la antítesis de la representación de los contribuyentes. El caballo y la calesa eran un invento increíblemente necesario, pero cuando ya no se necesitaban, Estados Unidos avanzó y ascendió y ha sido un gran éxito. ¿Dónde estaríamos ahora si los sindicatos de caballos y carruajes hubieran tenido éxito en retrasar el desarrollo del motor de combustible y exigieran a los contribuyentes estadounidenses que paguen sus látigos y ruedas y la atención médica en lugar de invertir en soluciones progresistas para viajar?
Los sindicatos de maestros no tienen ningún interés en los estudiantes. Nuestros hijos son signos de dólar para ellos. No solo son inútiles, son peligrosos y si tenemos alguna esperanza de salvar la educación pública en Estados Unidos, debemos acabar con ellos. Pararlos completamente y de golpe.

When I first started in school choice activism, the recommended approach was to never criticize the teachers unions. The union PR machine has been so effective over the decades that just to mention the roadblocks they routinely throw up in front of education progress was a third rail. It would earn you the label “union buster” among the very people you were trying to persuade. School choice is a bipartisan issue with plenty of Democrats in favor of it, but it was hard to enlist those Democrats to team up in the fight when it might seem like you’re asking them to denigrate the union system.
So we stayed away from it and made our arguments in other ways. There’s too much money and not enough accountability; stats show choice works; poor minority students benefit most from school choice; school choice creates competition which drives public schools to up their game. There’s a long list of persuasive arguments and in the interest of not creating an unnecessary divide in delicate alliances, we tiptoed around the union issue.
But I can no longer deny the biggest issue facing the success of our students. I can no longer pretend that the number one roadblock to providing the education our communities need is just a “side issue.” I can no longer be a party to the perpetuation of greed in the name of “coming together.” What has happened to our children during COVID has stripped away the last of my tolerance.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a student of history and I understand the power of collective bargaining and how it changed our society for the better during the industrial age. The wealthy and entrepreneurial industrialists pushed us into the era of American dominance and that is a good thing. There is no doubt that without being forced into accountability, many would have continued to abuse and overwork desperate employees and their children. Unionizing forced that accountability.
Power and greed are not exclusive to any one economic set, and unfortunately as unions began to increase in influence and dues money, they also increased their greed. Which is fine when a private company is negotiating with union bullies. That’s a transactional relationship and companies can be held accountable for their own terrible negotiations. I don’t like it, but it’s private business. Everyone can do what they want.
Public school teachers are paid by the taxpayers. When they unionize they do not do so against a large corporation like Ford or GE. They are necessarily unionizing against the taxpayer. Except the taxpayers have no say in negotiations. It’s a one-sided relationship, with unions having all the power and their bosses (we, the taxpayers) having no choice but to pray they negotiate themselves into actually serving our children.
So far they have failed miserably. It should be no surprise, given that they are unions for teachers, not students. It’s right there in the name. But it is shameful that people like Randi Weingarten keep using our children as shields for their greed, pretending that everything they do is for the students. Nothing they do is for children and I might not even mind that if they were honest about it.
The Weingartens of the world have no interest in making better opportunities for our children. The greedy underbelly of their noble exterior has been stripped away by COVID. While parents helplessly watched their children sink into isolation and depression and lose over a year of vital skills work, the teachers unions bullied local schools boards and muscled their way into the CDC – of all places – to enforce their desires on the COVID language coming out of the nation’s health entities. It was supremely evil.
It is even more evil that Randi Weingarten – president of America’s most powerful teachers union and the head of the lone stumbling block preventing schools from returning to education – has been trying to gaslight Americans into believing that she’s been advocating to get kids back to school this whole time.
She is asking us to believe that while private schools have been able to operate safely and completely, somehow public schools are immune to solutions. The devil is a liar and lying liars lie all the lying time.
While we parents wept for our children, unions called us selfish, cruel, even murderers. For varying reasons they wanted to stay home and stay paid while the people they supposedly served either had to go unpaid to stay home or abandon their children to their own devices during the day in order to put food on the table. When we complained more, they accused us of just wanting a glorified babysitting service. No. We want the education you people set up as not only our “human right”, but the narrow path to success.
Public schools soak up more and more of our tax dollars every year while delivering less and less on their promises. When we dare question the results, we’re told they just need more money and less competition.
Teachers unions have thwarted the progress of our children around every corner. They have delayed their lives in service of their own whims. If America’s teachers are so frightened of a virus they’ve now all been vaccinated for, they need to quit. They are not entitled to their jobs if they aren’t willing to give our kids what they are entitled to – a decent public education.
Unions have destroyed education in the inner cities, gutted the graduation rates of minority students, and bribed our politicians to actively work against their employers – the people. They are no longer a service, they are a drain. They are evil and they have allowed the most vile, selfish, greedy among them to rise to the top and grow fat on the suffering of the students they claim to love.
It is time to disband the teachers unions. They are outdated. We no longer live in a world without protections for workers and even if we did, a public union is and always will be the antithesis of taxpayer representation. The horse and buggy was an incredibly needed invention, but when it was no longer needed America moved onward and upward and it has been a roaring success. Where would we be now if horse and buggy unions had succeeded in delaying the development of the combustible engine and demanded American taxpayers pay for their whips and wheels and medical care instead of investing in progressive solutions to travel?
The teachers unions have no interest in students. Our kids are dollar signs to them. They are not only useless, they are dangerous and if we have any hope of salvaging public education in America, we must end them. Full. Stop.
