Hispanic Parents Shouldn’t be Excluded from Decisions on their Children’s Education

As a teacher for over 25 years and board member in an Orange County District, I am heartbroken over our County Superintendent’s dishonesty to the Hispanic Community. His rebuttal quoted the 2008 Heath Standards NOT the 2019 Health Framework which he accepted 5 million dollars from the state to implement.
You may ask, WHY is this white woman so concerned about the Hispanic community? Let me tell you why. I owe my life to the Hispanic Community. Before I was born, a Hispanic man, Manuel, who did not speak English, was given a dream. His dream was to help a man on a corner who was homeless. That man was my father. Manuel and his wife brought my dad into their home, clothed him, fed him, and helped him get a job. They took him to an English church where my dad found God. In time, my dad was sponsored to attend seminary, he married my mom, and became a minister. I was born and raised in downtown Santa Ana. Due to my dad’s gratitude to the Hispanic Community, he sponsored many Hispanic men and women to attend Bible College and helped them start Spanish Churches. He passed away this year and many Hispanic leaders spoke in his honor. I love the Hispanic community. When I speak the truth to you, I have nothing to gain and everything to lose.
I tried to get the Framework provided in Spanish, so the Hispanic community could have a voice. I was denied. Due to this discrimination, I filed a complaint to the Office of Civil Rights. I am not an important person with much political weight, so I asked other organizations to help stand for the Hispanic Community. I asked Dr. Mijares who is the Orange County Superintendent of Schools, the California Teachers’ Association, the California School Board Association, the American Civil Liberties Union. To my shock, none of these people or organizations, who say they care about minorities, would stand up for you. WHY? Maybe they do not want you to know what the state plans to teach your children in school. Maybe they think you do not care. I believe they have greatly underestimated the Hispanic Community. Latino families cherish their children and will passionately fight to protect their innocence and faith.

Los Padres Hispanos No Deberían Ser Excluidos de las Decisiones Sobre la Educación de Sus Hijos

Como maestra por más de 25 años, y miembro del consejo escolar de Orange County, me entristece la deshonestidad del Superintendente hacia la comunidad hispana. En su refutación la semana pasada, el cito los Estándares de Salud 2008 y NO el Marco de Salud 2019 por el cual el acepto 5 millones de dólares del estado para implementarlo.
¿Se preguntarán, PORQUE esta tan preocupada esta Anglo por la comunidad latina? Porque le debo mi vida a la comunidad Hispana. Antes de que naciera, un hispano llamado Manuel, quien no hablaba inglés, tuvo un sueño. El sueño de ayudar a un indigente de la esquina. Ese indigente era mi padre. Manuel y su esposa lo llevaron a su casa lo vistieron, alimentaron, y le ayudaron a conseguir empleo. Lo llevaron a una iglesia y ahí el encontró a Dios. Con el tiempo a mi papa se le patrocino el seminario para estudiar, se casó con mi mama, y se convirtió en ministro. Nací y fui criada en el centro de Santa Ana. Debido a la gratitud de mi padre con los hispanos, el patrocino a varios para asistir al Colegio Bíblico y ayudo a fundar Iglesias hispanas. El falleció este ano y muchos líderes hispanos hablaron en su honor. Amo a la comunidad hispana y al hablarles la verdad no tengo nada que ganar, pero si mucho que perder.
Trate de que el Marco de referencia se proporcionara en español para que los hispanos tuvieran voz; se me negó. Debido a esta discriminación, sometí una queja ante la Oficina de Derechos Civiles, no soy una persona importante ni con peso político, así que solicite el apoyo de organizaciones. Pedí al Dr. Mijares, Superintendente Escolar de Orange County, a la Unión de Maestros (CTA), a la Asociación de Juntas Escolares (California School Board Association), al ACLU, y para mi sorpresa ninguno de ellos, que dicen preocuparse por las minorías, quiso defenderlos. ¿POR QUÉ? Quizá no desean que se enteren de lo que el estado planea ensenar a sus hijos en las escuelas. Quizá crean que no les interesa. Han subestimado enormemente a la comunidad hispana, las familias latinas aprecian a sus hijos y lucharan apasionadamente por proteger su inocencia y su fe.
