Tribute To Al Vasquez

“Imagine a forest filled with trees, standing stories high, and then feel the massive branches brushing up against your skin while you follow an unexplored trail you know will lead you to a new and enlightening path of greatness. A path that leads you to a land of giants whom you find to be the family that accepts you, listens to you, supports you, celebrates with you your success and is also there for you in your most troubling times.”
Al Vasquez, a great leader, led that giant family for myself and for many other community members who sought out a vision to make our Country a finer place for us all. Although, this man no longer walks with us his ever-living presence, through the words he wrote and spoke, will forever remind us that we are not alone. Through his influence he empowered us all to find our own unique voice and to overcome the fear that often holds us back from becoming who we were meant to be.
I continue to be reminded each day of how much I learned from Al. When I encounter a cry for help or call to action I feel the greatness of his words swell up inside and propel action. At times, I recall his words of wisdom and allow them to guide my dissertation. And in other instances, I recall his silence as he deeply contemplated the complexity of the issues we faced. In either circumstance I endure, I carefully recall the resounding effect Al had on us all.
Today, Al’s legacy continues through us. His teachings and words of wisdom inspire our community members to reach for the impossible and fight for what is just and right. Whether we continue through the written word or by formidable action, the foundation of hope and perseverance that he built places each of us on solid footing as we continue to be the voice of the minority, the voice of the oppressed or the voice of those who live in fear.
And by virtue of his humble teachings we are a greater community, a greater mentor to future leaders and a greater Country. I believe Colin Powel, former United States Secretary of State, said it best that “Great leaders are almost great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate and doubt, to offer a solution everybody can understand.” He may as well have been referring to our Coachella Valley Leader Al Vasquez.
Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill, regarding the ability of an individual or an organization to “lead” or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations. Al’s leadership viewpoints, although controversial at-times, were present in his literature, his approaches to leadership, and also within the moments of solitude and reflection. Such a man truly embodied the term “Great Leader” in the whole sense of the words’ meaning.
Al’s influence within my existence has grown and blossomed since the first day I walked into his office for my 1st interview, a seed of passion methodically planted inside my soul. I am humbled and grateful for his friendship, for his strength and for embedding the belief that we all have the power and ability to effectuate change where the chance of change seems tenuous or even insurmountable. I have learned that there is no monumental challenge that we cannot face, no turbulent situation that we cannot manage and no unreachable heights that we cannot climb.
What we’re looking for is often inside us all — for me, it just took one special friend to help realize that — my friend, and yours, Al Vasquez; a soft-spoken leader, an admirable man with the grace and willpower to master the literary quill of history.

“Imagina un bosque con sus árboles, altos y llenos de historias, siente sus grandes ramas rosando tu piel, mientras recorres el inexplorado sendero, que sabes te llevará a descubrir algo nuevo y esclarecedor de su grandeza. Un camino que te transportará a una tierra de gigantes, donde encontrarás a la familia que te acepta, te escucha, te apoya, celebra contigo el éxito y, también está ahí en tus momentos más preocupantes.”
Al Vásquez, fue un gran líder que me condujo a esa familia enorme para mí y para muchos otros miembros de la comunidad, con una visión para hacer de nuestro país un lugar mejor para todos nosotros. Aunque este hombre ya no camina a nuestro lado, su presencia seguirá siempre viva a través de las palabras que él escribió y pronunció, siempre nos recordará que no estamos solos, a través de su influencia nos impulsó a encontrar nuestra propia voz, para superar el temor que a menudo nos detiene para ser quienes estábamos destinados a ser.
Continúo recordando cada día lo mucho que aprendí de Al, cuando emito un grito de ayuda, siento la grandeza del oleaje de sus palabras y su impulso a la acción. A veces, recuerdo sus aportes de gran sabiduría y les permito dirigir mis discursos, en otros casos, recuerdo su profundo silencio al contemplar la complejidad de los problemas que enfrentamos, en cualquier circunstancia guardo cuidadosamente el efecto resonante que Al ha tenido en todos nosotros.
Hoy el legado de Al continuará a través de nosotros, sus enseñanzas y palabras de sabiduría, inspirarán a nuestra comunidad a luchar por lo imposible, por lo que es justo y correcto. Si lo seguimos a través de su palabra escrita o por una acción formidable, continuaremos los fundamentos de esperanza y perseverancia que construyó en cada uno de nosotros, poniendo firmeza para seguir siendo la voz de la minoría, la voz de los oprimidos, la voz de los que viven en el miedo.
En virtud de sus enseñanzas somos una comunidad formadora de líderes para el futuro de un gran país, creo que Colin Powel, ex Secretario de Estado de USA, dijo una vez algo notable: “los grandes líderes son los grandes simplificadores, que pueden acortar una discusión, el debate y dispersar la duda, para ofrecer una solución que todo el mundo pueden entender”. No dudo que ella se refería a nuestro líder del Valle de Coachella: Al Vásquez.
El liderazgo es un área de investigación y una habilidad práctica, relacionada con la capacidad de un individuo o una organización para “llevar” o guiar a otras personas, equipos u organizaciones. Los puntos de vista de Al sobre el liderazgo, aunque a veces controversiales, estaban presente en su literatura, sus enfoques de liderazgo y, también en sus momentos de soledad y reflexión. Fue un hombre que verdaderamente reunió el concepto de “Gran Líder” en el sentido y significado completo de la palabra.
La influencia Al Vásquez en mi vida, fue creciendo y floreciendo desde el primer día que entré en su oficina para mí una entrevista, metódicamente fue plantando una semilla de entusiasmo dentro de mi alma, siempre estaré humildemente agradecida por su amistad, por su ánimo para afirmar la creencia, que todos tenemos el poder y la capacidad para efectuar los cambios, aun cuando esos cambios parecieran imposibles.
Al Vásquez me enseñó que no existe ningún desafío monumental que no podamos enfrentar, ninguna turbulenta situación que no podamos manejar y ninguna inalcanzable altura que no podamos escalar, lo que estamos buscando está a menudo dentro de nosotros mismos. Sólo un amigo especial puede hacerme comprender eso.
Mi amigo y el de ustedes, Al Vásquez; un Líder cauteloso, un hombre admirable, con la gracia y la fuerza de voluntad para dominar la pluma literaria de la historia.
