Tribute To Al Vasquez

This is the time of year when High School Seniors are given Scholarships for achievements made throughout their 4 years of High School.  Many don’t know what they will study or become, many are certain that they will go on with what they have found to be close to their heart.
Several years back one of our members, Mr. Al Vasquez, started asking me about our Scholarship Program at East Valley Republican Women.  He began attending the June meeting which is when we gave out the numerous Scholarships to the East Valley High Schools.  One day he asked me what I thought about La Prensa Hispana Newspaper giving a Scholarship for a student studying journalism.  I thought it was a wonderful idea.  And so that Scholarship was established.
If Al was here now, I know his advice to these children starting their continuing education to reach their goal would be to not surrender to the fray.  In journalism especially, we have been overrun with fake news on a daily basis and those proponents of this kind of news will and must find that they, by not telling the truth, could change history.  “God is in charge, not man…the truth must be told no matter who or what ends up on top”, I can hear Al’s voice so easily explaining why the journalist must be unbiased and straight forward….why he must tell only the truth and tell both sides of the story.  In  our society today we have so many ways to get our message out and unfortunately, many times our message is not reasonably taken.  That is why all the intricate parts of the story revolve around the good journalist who does the work, all the work that is needed to give the audience the truth.
This year we will miss Al giving out the La Prensa Hispana Scholarship in Journalism but I personally know, with all that is in me, that Al Vasquez will be beside us sending his smile to cheer us on!

 

Esta es la época del año cuando se entregan becas por los logros alcanzados a lo largo de sus 4 años en High School. Muchos no saben qué estudiarán o llegarán a ser, otros tienen la certeza  que seguirán adelante con lo que han encontrado dentro de su corazón.
Varios años atrás uno de nuestros miembros, el Sr. Al Vázquez, comenzó a preguntarme sobre nuestro programa de Becas de Mujeres Republicanas del Valle (Scholarship Program at East Valley Republican Women). Él comenzó a asistir a la reunión de junio, que es cuando nosotras entregamos numerosas becas a las Escuelas Secundarias del este del Valle. Un día me preguntó qué pensaba acerca del semanario La Prensa Hispana dando una beca para un estudiante de periodismo. Me pareció una idea maravillosa. Y desde entonces la beca fue establecida.
Si Al estuviera aquí ahora, sé que su consejo a estos jóvenes que inician su educación continua para alcanzar sus objetivos, sería no rendirse ante las dificultades. En el periodismo sobre todo, hemos sido invadidos a diario con noticias falsas y los autores de este tipo de noticias deberán comprender que ellos, por no decir la verdad, podrían cambiar la historia. – “Dios está a cargo, no el hombre… la verdad debe ser informada sin importar quién o en qué termina la parte superior”.
Puedo escuchar la voz de Al explicando fácilmente por qué el periodista debe ser imparcial, recto y seguir adelante… por qué tiene que decir solamente la verdad y contar ambos lados de la historia. En nuestra sociedad hoy en día tenemos muchas formas de mandar nuestros mensajes al exterior y por desgracia, muchas veces nuestros mensajes no se toman en forma razonable. Por esta razón, todas las partes intrincadas de la historia giran en torno a buen periodista que hace su trabajo, todo el trabajo que sea necesario para dar al público la verdad.
Este año extrañaremos a Al Vázquez entregando la beca de La Prensa Hispana en Periodismo, pero sé personalmente, con lo que guardo en mi corazón, que Al estará a nuestro lado enviándonos su sonrisa para darnos mucho ánimo!
