Kamala Harris es Recibida en Guatemala con una Protesta de Ex Militares

La vicepresidenta de Estados Unidos, Kamala Harris, aterrizó el domingo por la tarde en Guatemala, en la que es su primera gira internacional desde que llegó a su cargo. A su arribo, Harris se encontró con una protesta de ex militares que participaron en la guerra civil que se desarrolló en el país entre 1960 y 1996 y que se manifestaron contra su visita.
Según manifestantes, la vicepresidenta de Estados Unidos llegó al país para entrometerse en los asuntos que solo competen a los guatemaltecos. Con pancartas que pedían la salida inmediata de Harris, e incluso algunas que señalaban que Donald Trump ganó la elección presidencial de 2020, los ex militares repudiaron la visita de Harris.
“Ella viene a manipularlos políticamente, con sus políticas de izquierda, de socialismo, y nosotros no comulgamos con eso”, dijo Fernando Linares, ex diputado de derecha, durante la manifestación, en declaración retomada por Milenio.
Esta no fue la única protesta que se originó previo a la visita de la vicepresidenta estadounidense. Un multitudinario grupo de personas salieron a las calles para manifestarse contra el gobierno del presidente Alejandro Giammattei, a quien acusaron de mentir a Harris en víspera de su arribo.
Harris llegó a la capital de Guatemala el domingo después de sufrir un pequeño susto a bordo del avión que la trasladó hasta este país de Centroamérica. La vicepresidenta de Estados Unidos se reunió a partir de este lunes con Giammattei y más tarde este mismo día partió rumbo a México para conversar con Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
De acuerdo a Prensa Latina, Harris habló con Giammattei sobre la seguridad en sus fronteras, la corrupción y el desarrollo económico, causas que identifica como causantes de la migración de miles de guatemaltecos hacia Estados Unidos.
Por su parte, El presidente guatemalteco hace 2 meses culpó a los mensajes “confusos” del gobierno de Biden por crear la crisis en la frontera con Estados Unidos, el segundo líder en hacer esa declaración después de que el presidente mexicano Andrés Manuel López Obrador hiciera comentarios similares en marzo. “Creo que en las primeras semanas del gobierno de Biden, los mensajes fueron contradictorios. Estos fueron mensajes de compasión que fueron entendidos por la gente de nuestro país, especialmente los coyotes, para decirles a las familias: ‘Llevemos a los niños’”, dijo el presidente Alejandro Giammattei durante una entrevista en MSNBC.
Harris fue nombrada por el presidente Joe Biden como la encargada de la Casa Blanca para liderar los trabajos contra la migración ilegal que se ha incrementado en el país desde el cambio de administración. Tan solo durante abril, más de 178.000 inmigrantes fueron detenidos en la frontera con México, la cifra mensual más alta en dos décadas en Estados Unidos.

 

Kamala Harris is Greeted in Guatemala with a Protest from Ex-Military

The vice president of the United States, Kamala Harris, landed in Guatemala on Sunday afternoon, in what is her first international tour since she took office. Upon her arrival, Harris encountered a protest by former military personnel who participated in the civil war that raged in the country between 1960 and 1996 and who demonstrated against her visit.
According to protesters, the vice president of the United States came to the country to meddle in issues that only concern to Guatemalans. With banners calling for Harris’s immediate departure, and even some noting that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election, the former military repudiated Harris’s visit.
“She comes to manipulate them politically with her leftist policies of socialism, and we do not agree with that,” said Fernando Linares, a former right-wing deputy, during the demonstration, in a statement taken up by Milenio.
This was not the only protest that originated prior to the visit of the US vice president. A massive group of people took to the streets to demonstrate against the government of President Alejandro Giammattei, whom they accused of lying to Harris on the eve of her arrival.
Harris arrived in the capital of Guatemala on Sunday after suffering a small scare aboard the plane that took her to this Central American country. The vice president of the United States met with Giammattei on Monday and departed to Mexico to meet with Andrés Manuel López Obrador. (Edited)
According to Prensa Latina, Harris spoke with Giammattei about border security, corruption and economic development, causes that she identifies as causing the migration of thousands of Guatemalans to the United States.
For his part, the Guatemalan president two months ago blamed the “confusing” messages from the Biden government for creating the crisis on the border with the United States, the second leader to make that statement after Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador made similar comments in March. “I think that in the first weeks of the Biden administration, the messages were mixed. These were messages of compassion that were understood by the people of our country, especially coyotes, to tell families: ‘Let’s take the children,’” President Alejandro Giammattei said during an interview on MSNBC.
Harris was appointed by President Joe Biden as the head of the White House to lead the work against illegal migration that has increased in the country since the change of administration. During April alone, more than 178,000 immigrants were detained at the border with Mexico, the highest monthly number in two decades in the United States.
