Preserving the Spirit Class – Willow Bow Making & Hunting Techniques

Hunting and gathering food was always a top priority in traditional Cahuilla life. Paul Campbell, author of the book Survival Skills will instruct on how to build a classic southern California-style willow bow.

Spirit Keepers Lecture – Local Efforts of Cultural Preservation

Panel presentation by local cultural preservation professionals from government agencies and Cahuilla reservations.

Preserving their cultural heritage is a high priority for Cahuilla reservations, but this effort is also an integral part of the activities of federal and state agencies. Learn more about how these agencies preserve Native history and culture through care of the environment, protection of archaeological sites, and promotion of traditional skills.

Preserving the Spirit Class – Atlatl Making (Traditional Native spear thrower)

Instructor: Amil Pedro (Cahuilla/Quechan)

An important weapon for hunting large game was an atlatl spear thrower. Amil Pedro returns to our museum to teach the basics of atlatl making and flint knapping. Besides making the spears, we will venture to the outdoors and practice the art of using an atlatl.
