Existen diferentes categorías y precios para realizar el trámite que permite obtener la tarjeta de residencia permanente en Estados Unidos.
Cualquier extranjero que contemple ser residente permanente en Estados Unidos deberá informarse de cómo obtener una green card, cuánto cuesta el trámite y qué documentos son necesarios para comenzar el proceso. Con este paso, los beneficiarios podrán trabajar o estudiar, viajar dentro y fuera del país, así como acceder a programas de seguridad social. Además, después de cinco años de conservar el estatus migratorio y mantenerse elegible, pueden solicitar la ciudadanía estadounidense.
La agencia encargada del trámite para conseguir una green card es el Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de los Estados Unidos (Uscis, por sus siglas en inglés). En 2023, los precios de los diferentes tipos de solicitudes permanecen sin cambios respecto a los años previos. Tanto los pasos a seguir como el costo final varían según la situación particular de cada persona, así como la categoría de solicitud.
La vía más económica para obtener una green card en Estados Unidos es mediante la participación en la lotería de visas, aunque está condicionada solamente a los ciudadanos de algunos países. Para el público en general existe la opción de solicitud por lazos familiares, que requiere el llenado y entrega del Formulario I-130 y el pago de US$535. Es importante considerar algunos gastos extra para pagar asistencia legal o exámenes médicos.
Para iniciar el trámite, todos los solicitantes deberán cubrir una tarifa de inmigrante por un monto de US$220, según establece el sitio oficial del Uscis. A partir de este primer pago, las diferentes categorías y costos de la green card en 2023 son:
-Para lazos familiares: Formulario I-130 US$535. Para esta opción, es necesario contar con un familiar que ya cuente con la residencia permanente en Estados Unidos y que participe en el registro de la solicitud.
-Para trabajadores inmigrantes: Formulario I-140: US$700. Para optar por esta vía, es obligatorio aspirar a ser contratado por una empresa de las aprobadas previamente por Estados Unidos o que se rijan bajo los términos del T-MEC.
-Para empresarios o inversionistas extranjeros: Formulario I-526: US$3675. Esta categoría está reservada para aquellas personas que pueden comprobar sus intenciones de invertir al menos US$800 mil en capital para empresas comerciales.
-Tarifa de Lotería de Visas: US$330.
Además de los anteriores, existen otros tipos de categorías especiales para obtener la green card en Estados Unidos que están dirigidas a trabajadores de organizaciones religiosas, menores de edad que necesitan protección por abuso, abandono, o negligencia, traductores o intérpretes de Afganistán e Irak que trabajaron para el gobierno, así como empleados de organizaciones internacionales.
Sin importar la categoría elegible, todos los solicitantes después deberán incluir en su proceso la presentación el Formulario I-485, que sirve para registrar el cambio de estatus migratorio y pagar US$1140. Para los menores de 14 años, el costo de la presentación de esta forma es de US$750.

¿Cuánto tarda en llegar la green card?
Una vez que se completan los requisitos y pagos correspondientes de la solicitud de green card, el Uscis puede tardar varios meses en procesar el trámite y la persona interesada podría ser llamada para realizar una entrevista y precisar información.
Tras conseguir la aprobación, por lo general, el tiempo que tarda en llegar la green card es de dos a tres semanas. Sin embargo, es importante tener en cuenta que el trámite puede retrasarse debido a circunstancias imprevistas.
