What do the Coachella and Imperial Valley Have in Common?

What do these to neighboring counties have in common? They all want what is best for their families. They want the health and well-being of their children and to know that they made the right choice when they decided to raise a family or to grow old in these two valleys.
Unfortunately, for many of them, the idea of staying in these valleys has become questionable. In the communities surrounding the Salton Sea, people are suffering the consequences of poor quality of air and water. Children coming out of the shower with skin rashes, potable water doesn’t have a good taste, color or even odor, so people cannot trust that water, even with an expensive water filter. What is the response from the experts? “the water they are receiving is ‘acceptable’ meaning that some people may not like the water, but at least is not harmful water” said Cástulo Estrada from the Coachella Valley Water District during a community presentation at West Shores High School on October 25th.
Besides the water issue, there is the air quality problem and it affects both Imperial and Coachella Valley. Environmental Health Specialist Dr. Astrid Calderas performed an air quality investigation and the results she obtained are alarming, no wonder so many children are suffering from nosebleeds and asthma, and that’s only a portion of the issues the community is facing, and they have been trying to bring it to the attention of the legislators and authorities.
Mike Matzke, president of the Border Patrol Union for Imperial County has been a loud and active advocate for this environmental issue. He described the conditions not only his agents face, but the community in general. The air and water pollution are almost unbearable, he requested some Epidemiological Studies but so far nothing has happened yet. As Lilian Garcia, an Environmental Health investigator said: “there are already laws in place to protect us from these issues, but they are not being enforced.”
Now that many political positions are up for reelection in 2020, we see plenty of familiar faces willing to get involved in this but just to get their faces in the picture. Don’t get deceived, do your research, think your vote and don’t vote for a political party, vote for the person.

 

¿Qué tienen en común estos condados vecinos? Todos quieren lo mejor para sus familias. Quieren la salud y el bienestar de sus hijos y saber que tomaron la decisión correcta cuando decidieron criar una familia o envejecer en estos dos valles.
Desafortunadamente, para muchos de ellos, la idea de permanecer en estos valles se ha vuelto cuestionable. En las comunidades que rodean el Mar de Salton, la gente está sufriendo las consecuencias de la mala calidad del aire y el agua. Los niños que salen de la ducha con erupciones en la piel, el agua potable no tiene un buen sabor, color o incluso olor, por lo que la gente no puede confiar en esa agua, ni usando un filtro de agua caro. ¿Cuál es la respuesta de los expertos? “El agua que están recibiendo es ‘aceptable’, lo que significa que a algunas personas quizá no les gusta el agua, pero al menos no es agua dañina”, dijo Cástulo Estrada del Distrito de Agua del Valle de Coachella durante una presentación comunitaria en West Shores High School el 25 de octubre.
Además del problema del agua, está el problema de la mala calidad del aire y afecta tanto al Imperial como al valle de Coachella. La Especialista en Salud Ambiental Dra. Astrid Calderas realizó una investigación de la calidad del aire y los resultados que obtuvo son alarmantes, no es de extrañar que muchos niños estén sufriendo de hemorragias nasales y asma, y eso es sólo una parte de los problemas que la comunidad está y han estado tratando de señalar y llamar la atención de los legisladores y las autoridades.
Mike Matzke, presidente de la Unión de Patrullas Fronterizas para el Condado Imperial ha sido un defensor fuerte y activo de este problema ambiental. Describió las condiciones no sólo a las que se enfrentan sus agentes, sino también la comunidad en general. La contaminación del aire y el agua es casi insoportable, pidió algunos estudios epidemiológicos, pero hasta ahora no ha ocurrido nada. Como dijo Lilian García, investigadora de Salud Ambiental: “Ya existen leyes para protegernos de estos problemas, pero no se están aplicando”.
Ahora que muchas posiciones políticas están para reelección en el 2020, vemos un montón de caras conocidas dispuestas a involucrarse en esto, pero sólo para poner sus caras en la portada. No se deje engañar, haga su investigación, piense su voto y ya no vote por un partido político, vote por la persona.
