Tribute To Al Vasquez
It is said that you know a man by his friends, the company he keeps. That is what can be said about Al Vasquez and company that he kept by friends and business colleagues as stated in tributes written since his passing. The many letters paying tribute to Al say nothing but good about what he has done to make this a better community. Al’s writings have touched many of us in his editorials and opinion pieces in his newspaper the La Prensa. I found it sad not knowing more about this man but when I read Al’s final writing in La Prensa, I did know him. As we know Paul the Apostle through his writings, I know Al through his writings. Writings of people reveal the person’s character. One writer wrote that Al was the “great communicator”. Al’s writings were thoughtful and poignant about what is happening to our country. Al stood up for this country, the forgotten worker and the forgotten children in his writings. Words are powerful. I found Al still being Al in his last article posted on the Internet December 30, 2017 “We Can All be Right”.
“I marveled at the fact most of us die never having found the magic of any given moment, we fall short of bringing color into our dreams. Not because we do not from time to time question the reason for our existence but simply because we find too many alternatives…Perhaps we ourselves make life more complicated than it needs to be. I thought about my constant search for relevancy and understood relevancy is what we make of it.” Al Vasquez.

Se dice que conocemos a un hombre por sus amigos, y del tiempo que mantiene esa compañía. Eso es lo que puede decirse de Al Vásquez, por la gran amistad que guardaba con sus amigos y compañeros de trabajo, tal como lo muestran los tributos que le han escritos desde su fallecimiento. Esos escritos de homenaje, dicen muy poco sobre todo lo bueno que hizo Al para mejorar nuestra comunidad. Los profundos mensajes y opiniones vertidos en los artículos editoriales que escribía en La Prensa Hispana, nos han impactado.
Me causaba pena no conocer más sobre este hombre, pero cuando leí sus últimos editoriales en “La Prensa Hispana”, lo conocí. Así como sabemos de Pablo el Apóstol a través de sus escritos, así conocí a Al Vázquez a través de los suyos. Los escritos revelan el carácter de la persona. Alguien que me antecedió escribió que Al era el “gran comunicador”. Sus artículos eran muy reflexivos y conmovedores acerca de lo que está sucediendo en nuestro país. En sus notas, Al se puso de pie para este país, por el trabajador y los niños olvidados. Las palabras son poderosas. Encontré su último artículo publicado en Internet el 30 de diciembre de 2017, (We Can All Be Rigth) “Todos Nosotros Podemos Estar Correctos”.
“Me maravilla el hecho de que la mayoría de nosotros morimos sin nunca haber encontrado la magia de algun momento dado, fuimos negados de ponerle color a nuestros sueños. No porque de vez en cuando cuestionáramos la razón de nuestra existencia, sino simplemente porque nos enfrentamos ante muchas alternativas… Tal vez nosotros mismos nos hacemos la vida más complicada de lo que debería ser. Y al pensar en mi constante búsqueda de pertinencia y relevancia, comprendí que la relevancia es lo que hacemos de ella”. Al Vázquez.
