What Would Al Do?
In community leadership, your opinion is taken very seriously and there will always be critics. The fear of criticism often stops people from sharing their opinion when it’s not the popular opinion.
Al Vasquez did not fear this criticism, he welcomed it. He was never afraid to debate and always happy to hear other opinions. I admired his courage. As a writer, he wrote with confidence and was never afraid to express his opinion. He always wrote with grace and leadership. He was very thoughtful in his remarks and left his readers interested in more.
I moved to the Coachella Valley in 2009 and continued my work in the community through the California State Assembly. As I networked, I met many community leaders who worked to make the Coachella Valley a better place. I was introduced to Al and Ana Vasquez by a close friend. Al was the quiet one and Ana is the fiery one. It was great conversing with them because there was never a dull moment.
I was so shocked to hear of Al’s passing. There was no one else that I met like Al. He was kind, soft spoken and very knowledgeable about the issues and history of the community.  The memories of our conversations came to mind.  I feel so thankful and humbled to always have his undivided attention during those conversations. No matter what was happening around us, Al was very focused on our conversations and always had something very insightful a comprehensive that would guide my opinions. I knew I could go to Al when there were issues in the community, I knew I would get an honest, intriguing response.
When I felt challenged in sharing my opinions, I often thought, “What would Al do?”
I would like to follow Al’s lead in sharing my opinion and not judging those who disagree, to not be afraid of what others think about your opinion, and that my opinion matters. I would like to challenge our community to follow his lead and debate the issues that will make the Coachella Valley a better place for future generations. Our opinions will shape our community and all opinions should be heard. He will be missed by our community, but he will always be remembered.
Thank you to Ana for giving me this opportunity to pay tribute to Al. Your strength and dedication will keep his legacy alive.

 

¿Qué Haría Al?
En el liderazgo comunitario, tu opinión se toma muy en serio y siempre habrá críticas. El temor a las críticas a menudo impide que las personas compartan su opinión cuando no es la opinión popular.
Al Vasquez no temía a esta crítica, la acogió con satisfacción. Nunca tuvo miedo de debatir y siempre estaba feliz de escuchar otras opiniones. Admiré su valor. Como escritor, escribió con confianza y nunca tuvo miedo de expresar su opinión. Él siempre escribió con gracia y liderazgo. Fue muy atento en sus comentarios y dejaba a sus lectores interesados ​​en más.
Llegué al Valle de Coachella en 2009 y continué mi trabajo en la comunidad a través de la Asamblea Estatal de California. Mientras trabajaba en red, conocí a muchos líderes de la comunidad que trabajaron para hacer del Valle de Coachella un lugar mejor. Un amigo cercano me presentó a Al y Ana Vásquez. Al era una persona tranquila y Ana es la persona activa. Fue genial conversar con ellos porque nunca hubo un momento aburrido.
Estaba tan conmocionada al escuchar de su fallecimiento. No he conocido a nadie  como Al. Era amable, de voz suave y muy conocedor de los problemas y la historia de todo Estados Unidos y de nuestra comunidad. Los recuerdos de nuestras conversaciones vinieron a mi mente. Me siento agradecida por haber tenido siempre toda su atención durante nuestras conversaciones. Sin importar lo que estaba sucediendo a nuestro alrededor, Al estaba muy enfocado en la vida diaria de nuestra comunidad, si yo quería tener información de cualquier tema le preguntaba, sabía que obtendría una respuesta honesta e interesante.
Cuando siento el reto de compartir mis opiniones, a menudo pienso: “¿Qué haría Al?”
Me gustaría seguir el ejemplo de Al y compartir mi opinión y no juzgar a los que no están de acuerdo, no tener miedo de lo que otros piensen acerca de mi decisión, y que mi opinión sea importante. Me gustaría que nuestra comunidad  siga su ejemplo para que el valle de Coachella sea un lugar mejor para las generaciones futuras. Nuestras opiniones darán forma a nuestra comunidad y todas las opiniones deben ser escuchadas. Él será extrañado por nuestra comunidad, pero siempre será Recordado.
