Running For Mayor Magdalena Zepeda, Coachella City Council Member

A glimpse at Maggie Zepeda and her credentials including her Master of Arts degree in Communications reveals an active participant in community and a more than qualified candidate.
Maggie was born in Indio, California. She was rai

sed in Thermal and Coachella throughout her childhood. Her parents were immigrants from Mexico and worked as farm-laborers to support the family of six. Growing up, Maggie attended schools within the Coachella Valley Unified School District and graduated from Coachella Valley High School. A2

In 1996 Maggie’s academic record excelled graduating 5th in her class with a multitude of extra-curricular activities. She was Student Body President, Homecoming Queen, Mexican Independence Day Queen, Outstanding Drama Student, Summer Tennis Captain, Our Lady of Soledad Volunteer Sunday School Teacher and many other activities. Her constant educational striving and community involvement earned her an academic scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. She double-majored in Film, Television and Theater and Spanish- making her the first in her family to attend and graduate college.
She graduated from Notre Dame in 2000 and entered a graduate program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where she obtained a Master of Arts Degree in Communication Studies.
Professionally, Maggie has been employed in the field of education. Her career has consisted of substitute teacher, full-time employment at Coachella Valley High School and Palm Desert High School. In 2010 she was honored as Teacher of the Year at PDHS. Along with her full-time employment, she serves as an adjunct faculty member at College of the Desert. She has taught Public Speaking, English as a Second Language, Conversation courses and Tutor Training courses. She has also had countless of leadership positions in education such as EL Coach, ESL Lead Teacher, School Site Council President, Advisor for the ENLACE student group, and DSTA School Site Leader.

Over her illustrious career in education, Maggie has counseled, mentored and taught thousands of the Coachella Valley’s youth and adults. To impact her community on a larger scale she ran for one of two open seats for the Coachella City Council. As a result, in 2012, with the support of her community, friends, family, and colleagues, she was elected Council member for the City of Coachella. As councilwoman…Maggie has found another platform from which she can continue to positively impact the lives of those she serves. She believes in educational advancement for all, self-sufficiency and in the community’s economic development. She is a published author, a leader, a motivational speaker, and a tireless advocate for those she serves.

Maggie enjoys reading, writing, training for marathons and attending live musical performances. An overview of her candidacy exemplifies a leaping step forward for the City of Coachella should she be elected which includes, education, community and governance experience and a “can do” attitude which can bring the City of Coachella to the forefront of the Coachella Valley.
