La Importancia y Significado de las Graduaciones para los Latinos

Hay fechas y momentos importantes que recordamos a lo largo de nuestras vidas. Por supuesto, entre esos recuerdos, están el nacimiento de los hijos, sus primeras palabras, el momento en que empiezan a caminar, van a la escuela, a la universidad y se gradúan.
Tan resumido se lee como así lo sienten muchos padres. Entre añoranza y orgullo comprueban que el tiempo avanza y esos niños, que hasta hace nada eran solo unos adolescentes, ahora son jóvenes graduados universitarios con ganas de brillar en el terreno laboral y seguir cumpliendo sueños.
La vida avanza y por eso debemos valorar la importancia de los logros conseguidos y los que están por venir. En estos días en los que se celebran las ya tradicionales graduaciones de los estudiantes, muchas familias latinas viven de manera especial el día más importante de la vida académica de sus vástagos. Un día regado de orgullo y honor por el esfuerzo conseguido. Porque no nos engañemos, no es nada fácil llegar al momento de vestirse la toga y el birrete.
Mónica Mendoza, colombiana afincada en Miami, lo sabe bien. Nada viene regalado.
Esta periodista, madre de dos varones, no solo celebra el éxito de sus hijos, sino también el suyo propio. Después de muchos logros laborales como periodista, se acaba de graduar de un curso de Harvard sobre retórica y la importancia de los discursos. Lo ha hecho en inglés, algo que no imaginaba pudiera hacer cuando llegó a Estados Unidos hace años, con una maleta y poco más, como se suele decir. En la maleta traía muchas metas y las ha ido cumpliendo.
Ahora les toca a sus hijos cumplir sus sueños. A ellos les ha enseñado lo importante que es el conocimiento y mantener el cerebro activo, al día con los avances, las nuevas tecnologías, etc.
“Trato de inculcarles la importancia del conocimiento y el hacerse expertos en algo, buscar su nicho, eso en lo que pueden ejercer con pasión y que representa un camino de posibilidades en las que ejercer con estabilidad económica”.
Su hijo mayor decidió estudiar veterinaria, pero en Estados Unidos no es una carrera que se ofrezca en muchas universidades. En las que se imparte, el plan de estudios puede demorar hasta ochos años cumplirlo.
“Aparte los costos son excesivamente altos. Por eso decidimos que era mejor estudiar en Santo Domingo (República Dominicana), lo cual representa graduarse de médico veterinario en cuatro años validando el título aquí. Después de tomar esa decisión me he sorprendido cuántos médicos y veterinarios en Estados Unidos se han graduado en República Dominicana”, afirma Mónica.
Graduarse es un paso más y un momento que se recuerda en la vida, que significa que te estás construyendo un camino.
Para las familias latinas es especialmente importante. “Para los inmigrantes en general”, confirma Mendoza.
“Construir tu vida en otro país en el que tienes más oportunidades que en el tuyo, creo que es un gran motivo para avanzar. No solo tú si no también impulsar a tus hijos para que lo hagan”.
Por eso decidió volver ella misma a la universidad y obtener un certificado en Harvard. Quiere seguir formándose y avanzar como periodista y productora. Seguramente, pronto volverá a vivir otra graduación, la de su segundo hijo que quiere cursar música. O la suya, poniéndose el birrete y lanzándolo al aire.
“Vivo con la idea que se inspira con el ejemplo y en lo personal, cuando sea viejita quiero poder mirar atrás y sentirme orgullosa que logré hacer posible lo que parecía imposible para mi”, explica.
Las graduaciones son un momento especial que retrata la satisfacción por cumplir metas. Es la cumbre de una gran subida que estuvo llena de esfuerzos y sacrificios, pero se logró. Por eso, ¡lancemos el birrete al cielo! Y pensemos que este es uno de esos grandes momentos que recordaremos en nuestras vidas, pero, sobre todo, pensemos que lo mejor está por llegar.

Life moves forward and that is why we must value the importance of the achievements made and those that are to come. On these days when the now traditional student graduations are celebrated, many Latino families experience the most important day in the academic life of their offspring in a special way. A day showered with pride and honor for the effort achieved. Because let’s not kid ourselves, it’s not easy getting to the time to put on the cap and gown.
Mónica Mendoza, a Colombian living in Miami, knows this well. Nothing comes for free.
This journalist, mother of two boys, not only celebrates the success of her children, but also her own. After many job accomplishments as a journalist, he just graduated from a Harvard course on rhetoric and the importance of speeches. He has done it in English, something that he did not imagine he could do when he arrived in the United States years ago, with a suitcase and little else, as they say. In the suitcase he brought many goals and he has been fulfilling them.
Now it’s up to your children to fulfill their dreams. It has taught them how important knowledge is and keeping the brain active, up to date with advances, new technologies, etc.
“I try to instill in them the importance of knowledge and becoming experts in something, looking for their niche, that in which they can practice with passion and that represents a path of possibilities in which to exercise with economic stability.”
His eldest son decided to study veterinary medicine, but in the United States it is not a career that is offered in many universities. Where it is taught, the curriculum can take up to eight years to complete.
“Besides, the costs are excessively high. That is why we decided that it was better to study in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), which means graduating as a veterinarian in four years, validating the title here. After making that decision, I have been surprised how many doctors and veterinarians in the United States have graduated in the Dominican Republic,” says Mónica.
Graduating is one more step and a moment that is remembered in life, which means that you are building a path for yourself.
For Latino families it is especially important. “For immigrants in general,” confirms Mendoza.
“Building your life in another country where you have more opportunities than yours, I think is a great reason to move forward. Not only you but also encourage your children to do it”.
So she decided to go back to college herself and get a certificate at Harvard. She wants to continue training and advance as a journalist and producer. Surely, soon he will experience another graduation, that of his second son who wants to study music. Or his own, putting on his cap and tossing it into the air.
“I live with the idea that is inspired by example and personally, when I am old I want to be able to look back and feel proud that I managed to make possible what seemed impossible to me”, she explains.
Graduations are a special moment that portrays the satisfaction of meeting goals. It is the summit of a great climb that was full of efforts and sacrifices, but it was achieved. Therefore, let’s throw the mortarboard to heaven! And let’s think that this is one of those great moments that we will remember in our lives, but, above all, let’s think that the best is yet to come.
