Indio to get new Post Office

Groundbreaking scheduled for September 2008

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) was at the Indio Post Office on Fargo Street in Indio on February 20th, 2008. The Congresswoman toured the facilities and announced the progress being made on a new Post Office for the City of Indio. For several years, Bono Mack and city officials have met with the U.S. Postal Service in efforts to attain a new Post Office in the growing community. In attendance at the event were Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack, Lupe Ramos Watson, Mayor of the City of Indio, Jim Miller, Manager, Post Office Operations and former Indio Postmaster, City Councilman Mike Wilson and City Councilman Ben Godfrey.

A new facility is planned for Indio although the exact location is still under discussion. There has been resistance from Indio residents to a facility location towards Jackson and Ave. 52 which would align the Post Office closer to La Quinta than Indio. Rick Diaz expressed his thoughts noting La Quinta has three post offices. Residents including Rick Diaz, Planning Commissioner have indicated the Post Office should be centered more to serve the Indio community and in particular North Indio residents. The whole issue will be discussed in a series of forthcoming March meetings. The old postal facilities will remain open and the new Post office will become the Main Indio Post Office.

Mary Bono Mack praised Indio city officials for their perseverance in addressing the issue and stated their goal will soon become a reality.
