Eighteen Hundred Feet Helping to Stamp Out Animal Cruelty

March 27, 2008: The 8th annual Walk with the Animals is open to everyone and their dog, literally. April is Prevent Animal Cruelty Month, and on Saturday, April 5, more than 300 pet lovers and their four-legged companions are expected to help stamp out animal cruelty by joining the annual animal walk at Palm Desert’s Civic Park. All proceeds benefit Animal Samaritans SPCA’s Humane Education program, which sees more than 19,000 local students annually and teaches the basic tenets of compassion toward animals and animal care. Proceeds are generated by donations and pledges made to those who walk.

Registration starts at 8:00 am. Between 9:00am – 9:30 am there will be a blessing of the animals, and a welcome from Mayor Jean Benson. The walk kicks off at 9:30am. Participants can walk 1 -3/4 route around the park, or stroll the 3/4 route.

Event guests do not need a pet to attend. In fact, animals from Riverside County, the Palm Springs and Indio shelters, as well as Animal Samaritans’ shelter will be at the event ready for adoption for people in search of that perfect, four-legged family member.

More than 15 vendors will be on site, including a children’s petting zoo. Pet vaccinations and pet adoptions are available on site. Enjoy fly ball dog tricks and dog races, raffle prizes, talks by animal care experts, a guest appearance from the Palm Desert Police K-9 team, and a pet costume contest. All walkers raising $50 or more dollars receive an Animal Samaritans T-shirt. Additional prizes for $100 and $250 fundraisers. This year’s raffle items are the best to date, with giveaways from local restaurants, theaters, and pet distributors. Great packages for kids of all ages as well.

The student walk team raising the most money will receive a free pizza party for his or her classroom.

Walkers can bring their pledge forms along with their donated checks or money the morning of the Walk. Those wanting to pre-register can mail their pledge/entry forms and collected money to: Animal Samaritans SPCA, PO Box 513
