Is the DSUSD Board of Education Seeking the Best Interest of Children and Families?

Since the DSUSD Parent/District meeting on Dec. 6 did not go so well between the district and the more than 230 parents who were present, Dr. Wood Senior Director of Curriculum Instruction, said there would be another meeting, only to change his mind the very next day. The last Board Meeting of 2018 was on 12/18 and parents started arriving at 6:00 PM, but were turned away by district’s personnel telling them the board meeting would not take place. Parents who chose to stay went into the boardroom were indeed a board meeting was taking place.
Some parents signed up to be able to speak during open comments. The board made jokes and reviewed agenda items for 2 hours before any parent was allowed to speak. Among other things, the budget was presented and the fact that if all students were to have perfect attendance, the district would pocket an extra 13.2 million dollars.
Around 9:00 PM, 8 parents were given 3 minutes each to speak, 5 of those talked about the implications of AB 329 and the chosen curriculum Positive Prevention PLUS. Parents such as Kelly DeGeare, Seth Peterson, Jerread Wright, and Jason Gayler pleaded to the board of education to reconsider and find a way to protect the children from being exposed to a curriculum which not only is graphic, but questions parents’ authority and beliefs. Mr. Peterson asked if there could be such thing as a “Sanctuary District.” “Please, let us come together and reason together” Mrs. Rehbehn, a mother of 5 pleaded to the board. Not a simple word of acknowledgement was expressed to the parents, not even a promise to reconvene in January. Nothing, not a single peep from the board, they just continued for another hour approving motions by bulk and joking in between agenda items. Wendy Jonathan, president of the board was approached by parents before she left, but told the parents they needed to talk to Sacramento and not the board. One mom replied: “yes, but didn’t the board approve the curriculum just as you guys approved the World History textbook tonight?” She replied “oh yes, but you don’t have to contact to the whole board for that, just email Superintendent Bailey and if he doesn’t reply, then you email the rest of the board members.” Liz Ramirez, a mom present at the meeting said: “it is very sad to see that they don’t even care about our children, to them our kids are just dollar signs, shame on them.”

Como la reunión entre padres y el distrito DSUSD el 6 de diciembre no fue tan bien entre el distrito y los más de 230 padres presentes, Dr. Wood Director de Currículo e Instrucción, dijo que habría otra reunión, para luego cambiar de opinión al día siguiente. La última Reunión de Consejo del 2018 fue el 12/18 y padres comenzaron a llegar a las 6:00 PM, pero fueron despedidos por el personal del distrito que les dijo que no habría ninguna reunión. Los padres que decidieron quedarse entraron al salón y efectivamente, se estaba realizando tal reunión.
Algunos padres se anotaron para poder hablar durante el tiempo de comentarios. El consejo bromeo y reviso la agenda durante 2 horas antes de permitirle a los padres hablar. Entre otras cosas, se presentó el presupuesto y el hecho de que, si todos los estudiantes tuvieran asistencia perfecta, el distrito se embolsaría 13.2 millones de dólares extra.        A2
Cerca de las 9:00 PM, a 8 padres se les otorgaron 3 minutos para hablar, 5 hablaron acerca de las implicaciones de AB 329 y el currículo escogido Positive Prevention PLUS. Padres como Kelly DeGeare, Seth Peterson, Jerread Wright, y Jason Gayler suplicaron al consejo de educación que reconsideraran y hallaran una manera de proteger a los niños de ser expuestos a un material que no solo es gráfico, sino que además cuestiona la autoridad y creencias de los padres. El Sr. Peterson pregunto si podría existir algo como un “Distrito Santuario.” “Por favor, unámonos y razonemos juntos” suplico al consejo la Sra. Rehbehn, madre de 5. Ni una sola palabra de reconocimiento por parte del consejo, ni siquiera la promesa de reconvenir en enero. Nada, ni un pio del consejo, solo continuaron aprobando mociones en puño y bromeando entre artículos de la agenda. Wendy Jonathan, presidenta del consejo fue abordada por algunos padres antes de irse, pero les respondió que necesitaban hablar con Sacramento y no con el consejo. Una mama respondió: “sí, pero ¿que no el consejo aprobó el currículo, así como hoy acaba de aprobar el libro de texto de Historia Mundial?” a lo cual respondió: “oh sí, pero no necesitan contactar a todo el consejo para ello, solo escríbanle al Inspector Bailey y si no les responde, entonces le escriben al resto del consejo.” Liz Ramirez, una mama que estuvo en la reunión dijo: “es demasiado triste ver que ni siquiera les interesan nuestros hijos, que para ellos nuestros hijos son solo signos de dólares, me avergüenzo de ellos.”
