On Sunday, July 13th, the 9th Annual Pets On Parade Awards luncheon recognized the top pet photos from this year’s entries. Pet photo contest categories included: Large and Small Canines, Long-Haired and Short-Haired feline, Equine, Avian, Costumed, In Memoriam, and Wild/Other animal companions. Each summer the Pets on Parade Awards Luncheon draws more than 400 Coachella Valley pet owners with their leash-trained dogs. The popular event raises money for two area charities, Pegasus Riding Academy for the Handicapped and Animal Samaritans SPCA.

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians have unveiled in Rancho Mirage a granite sculpture by renowned artist Doug Hyde depicting the traditional peon (pronounced pay-OWN) games played by Cahuilla people.
Tribal members gathered at sunset Monday, July 14, as Chairman Richard M. Milanovich unveiled the 16-foot sculpture depicting the popular game of chance historically played by Native Americans around a campfire. Palm Desert was the site for the coming together of Sister City representatives and volunteers with the Riverside County Fire Department. The County Fire Department assists in intense training for Ixtapa firefighters and in providing equipment where possible. To date, 489 Mexican firefighters have participated in training sessions.
