Another Highly Polluted and Toxic Day in Calexico

Nothing is more evident during highly polluted and toxic days than the lack of awareness on the part of students, parents, and professionals regarding the dangers of exposure to pollution as well as the ineffectiveness of current efforts by county, state government, and community agencies to curb its impact on the health of community residents. Students, parents and professionals are going about their daily lives unaware of the toxic air they are breathing and completely unprotected. A flag program to alert residents of pollution levels has been in place for years in this district but fails to operate properly. A few weeks ago, during the Baja Fires, our neighboring school was holding outdoor activities that included presentations by the Calexico Police Department and the Border Patrol. Many of the students in this district are suffering from serious respiratory illness including asthma and exposing them to dangerous levels of pollution can lead to serious health problems.
The current regulatory monitoring system operated by the county, on the other hand, averages data and does not provide real-time information and, as such, is of no help to residents during critical pollution episodes. While Purple Air monitors had responded to high levels of pollution for hours during the morning on November 14, regulatory monitors did not spike until much later. How can this be of any assistance to someone suffering from asthma and who needs to be at school by 8 a.m.? Imperial Valley’s community monitoring network also fails to respond effectively to critical pollution episodes. What this community needs is a serious commitment from the county and from the state to implement effective educational programs throughout our communities and at all levels of education including the workplace in order to change the current perception that existing levels of pollution that are harming its residents are acceptable. It is also imperative to install an effective monitoring system that can provide real-time data during critical times so that community residents can immediately protect themselves from the harmful effects of pollution. This is by no means a call for additional funding for existing programs such as the flag program and current monitoring systems because I see no need to continue wasting badly needed taxpayer dollars on initiatives that, to this day, have managed to produce no meaningful results. Thanks to a donation from Dr. Astrid Calderas,  I have managed to deploy a Purple Air monitor outside my classroom that allows me to share real-time data with our school nurse and provide my colleagues with valuable information regarding the quality of air so that they can take precautionary measures to protect themselves and our students during times of critical pollution episodes that so frequently impact the communities of this valley.

 

Nada es más evidente durante los días altamente contaminados y tóxicos que la falta de conciencia por parte de los estudiantes, padres y profesionales sobre los peligros de la exposición a la contaminación, así como la ineficacia de los esfuerzos actuales del condado, el gobierno estatal, y agencias comunitarias para frenar su impacto en la salud de los residentes de la comunidad. Los estudiantes, padres y profesionales viven su vida diariamente sin darse cuenta del aire tóxico que respiran. En este distrito hay un programa de banderas que alerta a los residentes sobre los niveles de contaminación, pero no funciona correctamente. Durante los Incendios de Baja, nuestra escuela vecina estaba llevando a cabo actividades al aire libre que incluían presentaciones del Departamento de Policía de Calexico y la Patrulla Fronteriza. Muchos estudiantes de este distrito sufren enfermedades respiratorias graves, incluyendo asma, y exponerlos a niveles peligrosos de contaminación puede conducir a graves problemas de salud.
El sistema actual de monitoreo regulatorio del condado promedia los datos, pero no proporciona información en tiempo real y así no ayuda a los residentes durante los episodios críticos de contaminación. Aunque los monitores Purple Air respondieron a altos niveles de contaminación durante horas durante la mañana del 14 de noviembre, los monitores reglamentarios no aumentaron hasta mucho más tarde. ¿Cómo beneficia esto a alguien que sufre de asma y que necesita estar en la escuela antes de las 8 a.m.? La red de monitoreo comunitario de Imperial Valley tampoco responde eficazmente a episodios críticos de contaminación. La comunidad necesita un compromiso serio del condado y del estado para implementar programas educativos efectivos en todas nuestras comunidades y en todos los niveles de educación, incluyendo el lugar de trabajo con el fin de cambiar la percepción actual de que los niveles existentes de contaminación son aceptables. También es imperativo instalar un sistema de monitoreo eficaz que proporcione datos en tiempo real durante los momentos críticos para que los residentes de la comunidad puedan protegerse inmediatamente de los efectos nocivos de la contaminación. Esto no significa ningún financiamiento adicional para programas existentes como el de banderas y los sistemas de monitoreo. No hay necesidad de seguir desperdiciando dólares de contribuyentes en iniciativas que, hoy en día, no han logrado producir resultados significativos. Gracias a una donación de la Dra. Astrid Calderas, ahora tengo un monitor Purple Air fuera de mi aula que me permite compartir datos en tiempo real con nuestra enfermera y colegas sobre la calidad del aire para tomar medidas de precaución para protegerse a sí mismos y a nuestros estudiantes en episodios críticos de contaminación que frecuentemente afectan a este valle.
